Santa Monica Travel Guide

So like six months ago my friend and I joked about how we should run away somewhere warm for our birthdays (they’re one day apart) and a few weeks later we brought it up again and I was feeling particularly adventurous so I booked our flights and hotel on the spot 😳 IT WAS HAPPENING. Cue obsessive Pinterest research of all the most instagrammable spots in LA. We’re bloggers now, okay. 😂

Since we knew we were going to be running around all over town we knew we needed a rental car. I had heard a lot about Turo, but never used them before because I usually need to rent car seats, but solo mom trip = more freedom so we went for it. You can rent anything from a Corolla to a G wagon since you’re driving someone’s personal car. It’s totally insured and legit (I had my lawyer check 😂) and we got the cutest little Jeep Wrangler for our weekend for only $54/day!

Number one on our list was the Hollywood sign, obviously. So as soon as we landed we drove straight there. You can read Sam’s post about that adventure here (https://samanthaheneghan.com/)

We decided to stay in Santa Monica because we wanted to be near the beach and picked The Viceroy. It was SO cute. I’ll take a boutique hotel over the Four Seasons any day!! They welcomed us with champagne and everyone was super sweet.

I mean even the bathroom is adorable.

After our hike we were literally dying so we quickly checked in, showered our bodies (lol) and headed to the Drybar. If you’ve never been to a Drybar, you are seriously missing out. All they do is wash and style your hair, but it’s like a mini spa experience and neither of us had the energy to wash our own hair (first world problems).

Once we got pretty, we wasted time until dinner at Catch. Possibly the worst I’ve ever been treated at a restaurant, but hey it’s LA lmao. I will say that the food was effing amazing (Sam swears it was the best steak of her life), but not sure I’ll ever go back. If you do go, I’d recommend making your reservation at least an hour before you actually want to eat and be okay with standing at the bar for eternity. On the bright side, it was prime people watching territory since everyone thinks they are HOT SHIT.

DAY TWO:

First on the agenda- breakfast in bed. Duh!

IMG_1329.JPG

Next- rent bikes and wonder the pier. The Viceroy is situated right between Venice beach and the Santa Monica pier and there are bikes for rent everywhere. Also apparently our hotel had free bikes for guests to use but didn’t tell us 🤔

Lol 👆🏻 Who did I think I was?

Next stop- our hotels ADORABLE pool

The other nice thing about LA is that literally everyone is taking pictures of themselves so it feels way less awkward.

IMG_1497.JPG

Ummmm HELLO PINUP!! Might get her tattoo’d on my thigh.

After our pool photo shoot and two mojitos we were feeling extra extra so we setup a tripod in our room to take tumblr pics 😂 I cant believe I’m telling you all my secrets.

Then some tripod beach yoga action

After the beach we had dinner at Nobu. We forgot to book the Malibu location in advance so we had to “settle” for LA, but after our Catch experience I was very pleased to go somewhere less busy. I highly recommended the wagyu tacos😍 and any of the sushi. Sashimi is weird.

DAY THREE:

Our final day (or so we thought). Woke up, went to take more pool pics, packed our shit and then got a notification that Sam’s flight was cancelled. Cue panic. My flight was still on schedule, but being the amazing friend I am, I decided to rough it one more day in paradise so that she didn’t have to stay alone. Friendship is all about sacrifice, you know. So I switched my flight, got her a new one, extended the car rental, fought with my husband, arranged a babysitter, and got another room for the night.

After all that we finally got to brunch at The Ivy only to find out we were a day late to be eating next to Reese Witherspoon 😭 but the food was bomb and the place was adorable. Highly recommended!

After brunch we drove to Beverly Hills, naturally. Roamed around Rodeo drive and then went back to the hotel where I drew the curtains and curled into bed to recharge my introvert batteries.

I hope you enjoyed reading and if you’re planning a trip soon, I hope this helps fill your itinerary!

Come oil with me!

Hi friends! If you’re here, I’m just going to assume you saw my Instagram story last night and decided you want to learn more about joining Young Living! I wanted to do a blog post just to outline why I chose young living, the benefits of being a member, and my must have products! If you already know you want to join and don’t need any of this info, just scroll to the bottom of this post and I’ve attached a link to enroll!

Okay, so first I just want to address the three most common questions I get about oils/young living:

1. Why did I choose Young Living

The main answer to this is THE SUPPORT! YL has a huge network of knowledgeable leaders (with incredible instagram accounts dedicated to all things essential oils) as well as Facebook groups (that you’ll be added to when you join!) where you can ask questions, get tips and ideas, and share experiences!

The other top reason I chose Young Living is for their Thieves line! I feel like in recent years there’s been this realization about just how bad all the chemicals in every day products are for your body. If you haven’t heard any of this, try downloading the app “think dirty” and start scanning some of the cleaning products under your sink 😳

2. Do I have to get a “membership”?

Technically, no. You can purchase oils from YL any time BUT youd be paying the retail price.

3. What’s a membership?

To join my team and become a member, you have to purchase a starter kit ($165). But it’s just a one time thing (no yearly fee or anything) and the kit is an amazing value! It has all the most popular oils plus samples of the thieves line, the ningxia antioxidant drink, and a diffuser!

Okay, moving on. Next I want to just quickly outline my MUST have products and some of my favorite ways to use oils:

1. Thieves household cleaner

I cannot rave about this product more! I’ve converted so many of my friends and family to using Thieves instead of the harsh chemical cleaners from the store! First of all, it lasts you FOREVER. Just put one capful of the all purpose cleaner in a 16oz glass bottle and filled to the top with water and boom- the only cleaner you need for your entire house! Counters, bathrooms, windows, floors, stain solution, fabric refresher (bye febreze👋🏼) and more! I literally sound like an infomercial 🙄

But truthfully it’s amazing and it makes “ditching and switching” super streamlined. We use the dish soap, dishwasher powder, laundry detergent and the household cleaner.

2. Sleepyize

No, this alone will not make your child magically sleep 12 hours a night if they never have before. BUT it’s an amazing addition to their nighttime routine and I truly believe it’s been the difference in Navy having less night terrors (once she let me start putting it topically)  ! And now she asks for her “sleepy oil” every night! I have always diffused it in the kids rooms and I swear it knocks me out 😂 but it’s made the biggest difference once I started applying it directly to their skin. It also comes pre-diluted, so just stick a roller ball on top and you’re ready to go!

3. Candle alternative

I have to admit. This was a hard one. I was a diehard Bath & Body candle lover. But ignorance is bliss and once I learned that they’re full of bad chemicals I just couldn’t enjoy them anymore. Yes, I still occasionally will light candles in my house but I try to look for more natural options. But for the most part I just diffuse oils in my home not only for the scent, but for the benefits! Depending on what you diffuse you can create different environments. Calming, grounding, uplifting, focus, or just plain cozy.

Okay my kids are literally going buckwild in my house right now so I have to wrap this up. If you have more questions feel free to dm me! But if you’re ready to jump in, here’s how you can join my team!

How I Use Essential Oils

Hellooooo friends! Remember me? I really fell off the wagon, huh? I swear from the moment the season started I have just been running around like a chicken with its head cut off (ew, what?). I literally haven't blogged in months! I had big plans about writing up a long detailed "Intro to Essential Oils" post, but that just didn't happen! I also thought I was really gunna jump head first into selling YL, but the truth is I just don't have the energy lol. So instead I'm just gunna share my favorite ways to use essential oils. Also, I'm gunna be honest and tell you I don't mix these in exact amounts. Most of the time I just eyeball it. Here we gooooo

Multi-purpose spray cleaner

  •  amber spray bottle
  • 1-2 Tbs castile soap
  • 20-30 drops of Thieves essential oil

*for a heavier duty spray cleaner, use white vinegar rather than castile soap (not for countertops)

Beauty Serum

  • amber glass dropper bottler
  • organic jojoba oil
  • organic almond oil
  • organic fractioned coconut oil
  • 5 drops frankincense
  • 5 drop lavender
  • 5 drops tea tree oil
  • 5 drops grapefruit oil

Muscle/Joint pain relief

  • organic carrier oil

  • any combination of the following: chamomile, lavender, peppermint, eucalyptus, clove, cypress, wintergreen, bergamot, ginger, francincense

*I applied peppermint and lavender to Justin's ankle sprain and he swears it helped with the inflammation

Now, I could list off 10 more from-scratch recipes of ways to use oils, but the truth is I prefer more of the ready-made YL products. I will go ahead and list them in case you're curious.

  • Deep Relief roller ball - roll on neck and shoulders for tension relief
  • Sleepyize - diffuse 3-4 drops in diffuser in kids rooms before naptime/bedtime
  • Ortho Sport Massage Oil - great for back massages or anywhere you have sore muscles
  • Thieves Household cleaner - dilute 2 Tbs in 16oz spray bottle for multi-surface cleaning
  • Thieves laundry detergent
  • Thieves Automatic Dishwasher powder
  • Seedlings baby oil - applied as moisturizer after baths

Okay now I'm hungry so I'm gunna end this here. Sorry nothing is linked, I don't know what I'm doing.

Tuft & Needle

Hi!! Quick post today about our new mattress! We previously had a (very expensive) beautyrest pillowtop mattress that we both loved at first, but within 3 years it had zero support!! Justin and I have both been waking up with back and neck pain and after traveling for two weeks and feeling better on hotels mattresses, we knew we needed to replace ours!

We decided to try out a Tuft & Needle mattress. It's a two layer foam; the bottom being the supportive layer and the top being the comfort layer. It's more on the firm side, but we are old now so we need the support!! You have 100 days to try the mattress and if you decide it's not for you, they come and pick it up and take it away!
